What is Hospice Care?

Hospice provides comfort and support to individuals in the final stages of terminal illnesses like cancer, heart failure, or dementia. This care addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, ensuring peace and dignity at the end of life.

Hospice programs cover all aspects of the patient’s illness, including medications, medical equipment like hospital beds and mobility devices, and exceptional medical and quality-of-life care.

When should I consider Hospice Care?

Hospice care aims to provide comfort and quality of life for those with life-limiting illnesses. Enrolling early ensures you benefit fully from its services. If your prognosis is six months or less, you may be eligible. In hospice care, the focus shifts to comfort and symptom management rather than further treatment.

Who is on my Hospice Care Team?

Each hospice patient is unique, and so is their care team. It comprises doctors, nurses, social workers, home health aides, therapists, volunteers, and chaplains. Patients are also welcome to include anyone they wish to ensure their journey is personalized.

Together, the team will develop a personal plan of care that supports your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs while focusing on every opportunity to enhance your quality of life.

Who pays for hospice care?

Bethesda’s mission has been built on providing quality care to everyone, regardless of financial ability. While hospice care is usually covered by Medicaid, Medicare, Veterans benefits, and most private insurance, no patient will be denied care due to inability to pay.

Hospice enrollment includes everything related to your loved one’s illness, such as comfort medications, mobility equipment, hospital beds, and hospice visits.

Will hospice support my family?

Care for your family is an essential part of the Bethesda hospice mission. Counseling and grief support are provided to help your loved ones emotionally and spiritually throughout this journey and beyond. Specialized grief care is available for spouses, children, and adolescents coping with your prognosis.

Our grief care team will continue to support your family for at least 13 months after your passing. This support may include chaplain services, phone calls, personal visits, written materials on grieving, and ongoing support groups.
