A Century of Caring: Ardis Just’s Story of Service, Resilience, and Grace

A Century of Caring logo

At 99 years old, Ardis Just has witnessed almost a century of change, challenge, and progress. A former Cadet Nurse during World War II, Ardis dedicated her life to caring for others and helping people through some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

In Episode 3 of the Age Well Podcast, Ardis reflects on her remarkable journey—from training as a nurse during wartime to caring for patients throughout her career. She shares memories of one patient in particular: a premature baby who wasn’t expected to survive. Decades later, that story remains a powerful reminder of the impact compassion and perseverance can have on a person’s life.

Throughout the conversation, Ardis offers wisdom gained from nearly a century of living. She speaks about the importance of faith, gratitude, and finding purpose through service to others. Her perspective on aging reminds us that while our circumstances may change, our ability to contribute, connect, and find meaning never disappears.

One of the most moving parts of Ardis’s story is her experience with hospice care. Rather than viewing hospice as an ending, she describes it as one of the greatest gifts she has received. The support, comfort, and dignity provided by hospice have helped her continue living well while focusing on what matters most.

Ardis’s life serves as a testament to resilience, compassionate care, and the power of human connection. Her story encourages all of us—whether we are caregivers, family members, or simply navigating our own aging journey—to embrace each season of life with gratitude and grace.

Listen to Episode 3 of the Age Well Podcast to hear Ardis share her extraordinary story in her own words.
